In an effort to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. it would be beneficial for young people to use YCCS competencies and creatively explore (CCC 3.1- 3.6) a few of Martin Luther King  Jr. discussion questions and activities inspired by his most famous quotes. These discussion questions will be a great way to introduce your students to three quotes by Dr. King that they may not be familiar with and interact with the quote in real time affecting real lives, right here in Chicago.

  1. “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”

To honor Dr. King’s influence on the world, it would be great to find an organization and/or cause that your students feel passionate and encourage them to volunteer. Visit the following sites to see a variety of resources that your students can use to serve on Dr. King Day in Chicago:

Then, have them take time to reflect, verbally or written, on the experience and think about ways to continue helping others (CCC 4.5- 4.6)  (Honeysett, Alex. “Martin Luther King Discussion Questions: Reflect on His Legacy.” Martin Luther King Jr. Day Discussion Questions & Reflection | Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 10 June 2021, https://www.hmhco.com/blog/mlk.)
